WyreStorm APOLLO VX20-UC Video Bar

Complete two-way control of the WyreStorm APOLLO VX20-UC conferencing video bar from RTI, over IP. The VX20 is four products in one box — a 4K auto-framing camera, a microphone array, a 2x2 presentation switcher and a wireless BYOD receiver — and this driver covers all four from a single RTI source. Everything the bar reports comes back as a system variable, so buttons light and text tracks the real device.

Key Features

  • Full camera control: the five modes (Normal, Auto Framing, Speaker Tracking, Presenter Tracking, Individuals Gallery), pan and tilt, zoom, four save-and-recall presets, mirror, WDR and HD image settings — each with live feedback.
  • Slider-ready zoom: a percentage command and a matching percentage variable, so a level widget and the bar share one 0-100 scale.
  • Source switching: HDMI, USB-C and both wireless BYOD channels, fullscreen or dual-view multiview with per-window source assignment.
  • Separate speaker and microphone mute: the expansion mic keeps its own tags, so an ordinary Mute button beside the volume can never mute the room mic by accident.
  • USB host switching: move the camera and mics between USB-B, USB-C and wireless so the bar follows whichever laptop is driving the call.
  • Wireless BYOD: casting enable, the on-screen pairing guide and the access code.
  • Friendly source names: set once in Driver Properties and carried through every button, the dashboard and the console.
  • Browser dashboard: a live control surface served by the processor — open it in a browser or drop it into an RTI Web Object.
  • Plain-English error reporting: the bar's undocumented error codes are translated, including the 4K camera lockout described below.
  • Diagnostics built in: a telnet console giving connection, firmware, camera and licence state in one command.
  • Sample project included: an Integration Designer file with the commands and tags already placed and wired.

Requirements

  • WyreStorm APOLLO VX20-UC video bar on the network, with a reserved IP address
  • RTI processor with network access to the bar on TCP 23 (Telnet). The control port has no password — the bar's web UI password is not used by the driver
  • Integration Designer 11.4 or newer, driver runtime 24 or newer
  • For camera zoom, pan and presets the bar's Camera Max Resolution must be set to 1080P — see below

How It Works

The driver speaks the bar's documented ASCII protocol over Telnet on port 23. The bar never reports changes on its own, so all feedback is poll-driven — a change made from a laptop or from the bar's own web UI still reaches the panel within a poll. Camera commands are gated so that a manual pan, tilt or zoom drops the camera out of Auto Framing first, instead of being silently refused.

One hardware behaviour worth knowing before you commission the camera: while the bar's Camera Max Resolution is set to 4K it refuses every zoom, pan, absolute-position and preset-recall command — the digital EPTZ crops out of the sensor, and at full resolution there is no headroom left. Mode changes, mirror, WDR and preset save all keep working, which is exactly what makes it look like a broken driver. The bar ships at 4K. Set it to 1080P in the bar's own web UI and the camera controls all come to life. The driver detects this state, warns on the dashboard, and clears the warning by itself when you change it. This behaviour is undocumented by WyreStorm and was confirmed on real hardware.

WyreStorm APOLLO VX20-UC Control Driver

Version 0.4

Two-way IP control for the WyreStorm APOLLO VX20-UC v2 all-in-one UC video bar: 4K camera, microphone array, speaker, 2x2 presentation switcher, wireless BYOD receiver and USB host switching.

Setup

1. Connect the bar to the same network as the RTI processor.

2. Give it a fixed address - either a DHCP reservation or a static IP set from its web interface.

3. In Integration Designer, open Driver Properties and set Device IP Address. Leave Control Port at 23 unless the bar has been changed.

4. Optionally set the four Source Names. These carry through to panels and the web dashboard, so use room language: "Room PC", "Laptop USB-C", "AirPlay".

5. Load the driver. Within a few seconds Connected turns true and the status variables populate.

Licensing

This driver is free, but needs a no-cost sign-up key tied to the processor. Without a key, control commands stop after a 120-minute trial. Feedback and status keep working, so a trial expiry looks like a bar that reports correctly but ignores button presses.

Read the MAC For Key variable (or type mac in the debug console), request a key from smarthomeprogramming.com.au, and paste it into Licence Key in Driver Properties. The key is per processor.

What The Driver Controls

Power: device standby on/off/toggle, auto-standby enable and timeout, reboot, and display power over CEC for both outputs.

Sources: HDMI, USB-C, Wireless 1 and Wireless 2 to all outputs or to a chosen output, plus the Guide screen and auto-switch.

Multiview: enable/disable, Full Screen and Dual View layouts, and per-window source assignment.

USB host: switch the camera, microphones and speaker between the USB-B host, the USB-C host and the wireless conferencing engine. For most rooms this is the single most useful button on the panel.

Audio: volume up/down and set, expansion-mic mute, audio output routing (speaker, HDMI priority or both), mic source (local, expansion, auto), and forced audio source.

Camera: five AI modes (Normal, Auto Framing, Speaker Tracking, Presenter Tracking, Gallery), smooth pan and tilt, zoom, home, absolute positioning, and four save/recall presets.

Wireless: casting on/off, access code (fixed, auto or none), soft AP and soft router.

Configuration: per-output resolution and per-input EDID.

Three Device Behaviours Worth Knowing

These are the bar's behaviour, not driver limitations. They are handled as gracefully as the hardware allows.

1. The camera only takes manual control in Normal mode. While any AI mode is running, the bar rejects pan, tilt, zoom and preset commands. The driver publishes Manual Control Available so a panel can show this, and by default it drops the camera to Normal automatically when a manual control is used. If you would rather the AI mode never change by itself, turn off Auto-Switch Camera To Normal in Options - manual camera buttons will then do nothing while an AI mode is active, which is the bar's own behaviour.

2. There is no absolute volume command in the firmware. WyreStorm's API supports only up and down steps of about 2 percent. Set Volume is therefore implemented as a ramp: the driver steps toward the target and stops when it gets there. A slider works, but expect it to slide rather than jump.

3. Multiview is unavailable while two displays are connected. The bar reports multiview as unavailable in that state. The driver exposes Multiview Available so a panel can grey out the Dual View button rather than offer something that will not happen.

Wiring The Camera Pad

The camera pans smoothly while a direction is held, so the four arrows are press-and-hold rather than repeat-fire.

For each arrow button, wire the Move command to Button Press and Move Stop (release) to Button Release. Do not set a repeat rate on these. Zoom In and Zoom Out are ordinary repeating buttons and are already set to repeat.

Web Dashboard

The driver hosts a room dashboard on the processor, on port 9066 by default. Point an RTI Web Object at http://processor-ip:9066 or open it in a browser. It gives you the camera pad, presets and AI modes, source selection, USB host switching, volume, mic mute and wireless settings, with live feedback.

If you run more than one web-object driver on the same processor, give each a unique Web Interface Port.

On an iPad, the RTI app caches web object content in memory. After changing the URL or the port, force-quit the RTI app and reopen it, or the panel keeps showing the old page.

Diagnostics

A telnet debug console runs on port 12548 by default (set Debug Console Port to 0 to disable it). Connect with any telnet client and type help.

Useful commands: status for a full snapshot, cam for camera state and the bar's own pan and zoom limits, usb for USB host details, get and set to send any API command by hand, probe to fire every read-only query at once, and licence to apply a key live without redeploying.

Remote logging is available for support. Leave it off unless asked. If the processor cannot resolve DNS, set Log Server Host to the bare IP 209.38.27.58.

Troubleshooting

Connection Status stays Connecting: check the IP address, and confirm the bar answers on port 23 by telnetting to it from a PC.

Everything reports correctly but buttons do nothing: the trial has expired. Check Licence Status and enter a key.

Camera arrows do nothing: the camera is in an AI mode. Check Manual Control Available, or tap Normal first.

Volume slides instead of jumping: expected. The firmware has no absolute volume command.

USB-B and USB-C buttons switch to the wrong host: set USB Host Names Swapped to true in the hidden Advanced category. No redeploy of anything else is needed.

Support

Smart Home Programming

smarthomeprogramming.com.au

Please include the driver version, the bar's firmware version from the Firmware Version variable, and a debug console status output.

This driver includes a 120-minute free trial — load it and it works immediately, no key needed, so you can prove it on site before committing.

After the trial, control commands stop while feedback and polling keep running. A licence key is tied to the RTI processor's MAC address and is issued per processor.

The MAC to quote is shown in the MAC For Key system variable, and by the mac command in the driver's debug console.
