Redback A6512 Serial Volume Controller v1.01

Overview

Controls the Redback A6512 Single Input Serial Volume Controller via RS-232.

Connection

- Connect the A6512 RS232 input to an XP serial port

- Serial: 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity

DIP Switch Settings

The A6512 has DIP switches on the unit. For RS-232 control:

- DIP switch 2: ON (enables RS-232 mode)

- All other DIP switches: OFF

Important: On the A6512, DOWN is ON. Ensure DIP switch 2 is in the DOWN position for RS-232 control to work.

Volume Range

- 0 = Off (muted)

- 79 = Maximum volume

- Volume Up/Down use configurable step size (default 3)

Functions

- Volume Up / Volume Down - adjust by step size

- Set Volume - set absolute level (0-79)

- Mute / Mute On / Mute Off - toggle or explicit mute

- Presets: Off, 25%, 50%, 75%, Max

Configuration

- Serial Port: select the connected port

- Default Volume: level set on startup (0-79)

- Volume Step Size: steps per Up/Down press (1-10)

Important Note

The A6512 is a one-way device (no feedback). The driver tracks volume internally. If someone adjusts the A6512 via another method (e.g. the A6500 wallplate or a potentiometer), the driver's tracked volume value will be out of sync with the actual device level.

Other Notes

- The device remembers its last level through power cycles

- Carriage Return (CR) is off by default and should not be needed. Only enable Append Carriage Return in config if the device does not respond to commands.
